Becoming “Stalkable”, How Are Your Online Profiles?

becoming-stalkable-how-are-your-online-profiles-1In my last article, I asked the question, are you “Stalkable”? (If you have not read that article you can find it here.) In a nutshell, your online presence helps prospects learn to “Know, Like and Trust” you enough to consider using your product or service.

In this article, we will look at what you can do to make sure prospects can find out enough information about you so they are comfortable contacting you.

Remember, as a professional, you want to allow prospects to get to know you via your online activities and public profiles. Let’s take a look at on line activities that will allow your prospects to get to know you better.

First off, we are going to limit this discussion to information a prospect can find out about you without you having to give them permission. Examples would include:

  • What you are posting on a Facebook Like Page
  • Any articles you are writing and posting on line
  • Public profiles
    • Biznik
    • Facebook
    • LinkedIn
    • Meetup
    • Twitter
    • Google Profiles

There are many other places you can have a public profile, I have just listed a few here. The information you include should be chosen with the intent to develop the prospects sense of who you are – to allow them to Know Like and Trust you. Let’s break this down further into some concrete strategies you can employ.

How people get to Know you – your profile information becoming-stalkable-how-are-your-online-profiles-2

Take your time and complete all of the profile. Remember, if someone is taking the time to look at your profile they could be thinking about purchasing one of your products or services.

As you complete your profile you want to write it like you are talking to a prospect. Provide the information prospects would want to know about you before they purchase your products or services.

I would recommend that you revisit your profiles once a quarter and update them. Include answers to questions to you are currently hearing from prospects.

Remember the purpose of the profile is to introduce yourself to someone without you being present. The better written your profile is, the more likely someone is to contact you.

That is it for now, next time we will look at establishing like and trust with your online presence.

Gettu or Gottu

Gettu-or-Gottu-BothThe title of this article might make you initially think of “names of bizarre animals” or some other sorts of weird categories you might find on the game show, Jeopardy. So before we go too far afield, let me tell you what it alludes to. At a recent networking group, the speaker passed out stickers for audience members to wear that said either Gettu or Gottu. Then he asked “So what are you?” No one knew what the heck he was talking about and that’s what made his presentation even better. Of course, he had prepped the group with some ringers to make his point and that’s OK since he went on to make his point with incredible effectiveness.

Gettu-or-Gottu-GottuHe proceeded and asked a second series of questions.

“What are you expecting to get out of today’s session?

Who would like to go first?”

Then he pointed to someone (a shill) and said, “Come on Joe, why don’t we start with you?” The response was,

“Oh, man do I gottu go first?”

Gettu-or-Gottu-GettuThe speaker stopped him and said

“No, that’s OK Joe, not to worry.”

Turning to another, he asked, “How about Mary, why don’t you start?”

Mary (the second shill), leaped to her feet and said with great enthusiasm,

“Great, now I gettu go first!”

Can you see the difference? Allowing for the grammatical assault, his point was made.

Quite simply put, some of us are Gottu people and some of us are Gettu. Many of us are frequently thinking, “Oh boy, I’ve got to do this” or “I have to do that.” It really colors the way we go about doing things and it makes us, in almost all cases that much less effective. Others cannot wait to sink their teeth into new or even every day projects and frequently and conversely exclaim, “YES, I gettu start working with this client!” or “I gettu finish up this project!”

Ask yourself, who would you want to spend any time with if given the choice? That’s right, the gettu people every time.

Do you think anyone chooses to work with those Debbie Downers of the world? No “expletive deleted” way. As you can imagine when I write this or any of the articles you are reading, I can’t wait to get to them. Hopefully you’ll think about this the next time you need to do something because, here’s the beauty of all this, you get to choose who you are going to be each and every day.

Why not make it the most effective choice you can make?

Character Traits of Successful People

Reaching for Success

I had a conversation with a client recently that made me stop and think about my own performance and attitude. Our conversation centered on why some people seem so much more successful than others.  What we discussed was a few simple character traits that seemed to contribute to their overall success:

Drive Hard: a sense of urgency. They seemed to have a very high commitment to achieving their goals. It was more than just ‘not accepting NO for an answer’. These people seem to have an internal vision or knowledge. Something that drives them. It is not fear – it is the pursuit of the idea and a healthy dose of faith. They have the faith to believe or know that somehow things will work.
Work Hard: these people also seem to possess a compulsive drive. They see the goal – a vision, sense of what can be achieved. They are so focused and committed to the goal that it seems they will let nothing stop, hinder or interfere. Truth is they are so committed to achieving the goal they see nothing else.

Play Hard: having fun while doing business is good. After working hard, they take time to look after themselves, enjoy life and have some fun. It is a sign of good mental health and indicates balance.

Finish Well: anyone can start well or sprint. These people finish what they start. They leave nothing left undone. They have endurance. They might appear to be perfectionists – actually they just want to finish what they started. And finish it well!
The difference between success and failure is often just a short distance away – the finish line! When you run a race, why quit 10 feet from the finish line? The truth is you need endurance to finish the race. All you might need is a little encouragement to finish well.

Surround yourself with driven, focused and passionate people. Ask them to mentor, coach and keep you accountable. Because, you are going to work hard and put in the time – why not maximize the results?

Carpe Diem! Seize the day!

What Makes a Great Leader

What_Makes_a_Great_Leader

I had a recent thought about what makes great leaders. Usually great leaders are born during times of adversity. Many of the great generals and presidents of the past have been recognized in history for their leadership when they stepped up to a tremendous challenge.  Abraham Lincoln, during the Civil War years, was a skilled leader who was a model for many of the traits recognized today in great leadership.  He was a skilled orator and believed in the practice of MBWA (Management By Wandering Around).

Leaders of today can be great leaders in their organizations by practicing three things consistently:

  1. Be Visible – That doesn’t mean you can create a Hollywood style video for your employees and customers and think your charisma will carry the day. Such media is useful for mass communications, but people still want the human face-to-face touch when times are difficult for them. Getting out into the workforce and customer locations is the most effective way to exhibit confidence and calm employees during stressful events.
  2. Be Up Front with Everyone – Trying to mask the truth will only cause more anxiety and distrust in leaders. Telling it like-it-is is generally well received when people know you’re being honest with them.
  3. Always Give Them Hope – Knowing that there is a light at the end of a tunnel and that it’s not a train coming will give employees and customers a sense that their efforts and trust in you are not futile. Hope keeps everyone moving forward.

Leadership requires aggressive individuals – those who accept a “take charge role”, but never forget to be human.
